Career prospects in the public sector are brighter than they have been for many decades. For example, the Public Service Commission of Canada forecasts that 45 percent of the federal public service and 70 percent of its executives will retire by 2011-12. The retrenchment of the early 1990s meant that there is not a large cohort of experienced younger public servants ready to replace them. As a consequence, governments are recruiting more public servants at the entry level, especially through internship programs.
More detailed information on recruitment and retention issues can be found in a recent Public Service Commission report at www.psc-cfp.gc.ca/centres/reports-rapports/ra-vf/index_e.htm
